There was sun! Did you see it? It was brief, but there were about 4 glorious days of sun, sadly that meant that all of the Far North knitters ran in, grabbed their yarn and ran back out again to go and enjoy a cool drink on a deck someplace bathed in the warm and wonderful sunshine. As a result there were only a few of us knitting at the little table on Friday night, but I will say a lot of knitting got done and projects were finished!

Kay has finished yet another hat from the book Boutique Knits, by Laura Irwin, this hat will be taught in the September hat class . As you can see this is yet another adorable hat that will look amazing on anyone, although Annie’s short hair really brings out the 1930’s flapper look of this hat.

Tonight I spent my time weaving in ends and sewing up the sleeves of the Rosamund’s cardigan found in the Fall 2009 Interweave Knits. This was a project I began last fall, Annie helped me choose the Queensland Collection, Kathmandu Aran Tweed. The color on the tag unfortunately is only described as #151. I am here to tell you it is a very rich café au lait, with flecks of chocolate brown, mocha brown, caramel, and the creamiest of cream. While wearing this cardigan I will have to accessorize with a cappuccino!

I know this will sound more than a little odd, but I have mixed feelings about finishing large projects, not as much with the small ones, but the large time consuming ones get to me a little. As the cardigan lays there blocking, I miss it, I feel a little empty, of course there are other projects that I can pick up or even begin something new, but this cardigan and I we have spent a lot of time together in the last few weeks. Now that I have finished it, it’s over. It’s like reading a really good book, not being able to put it down, but then it ends. Does anyone else miss their projects once they are done?

Quick Tip of the week

This week’s Quick Tip comes from the Rosamund’s Cardigan; the sleeves after bind off were very tight at the cuff, which was making the sleeve puff up, which I did not like, nor was it the intent of the pattern. Annie’s quick tip – Frog the bound off edge change to a needle one size larger and then bind off again. It worked! The sleeve lays flat just as it is supposed to.

The sky was dark and gray the evening of Friday the 13th as the rain poured and poured, but the Far North Yarn Co. was full of knitters, warm, laughing, and making our own bright sunny spot on the otherwise dismal landscape.

Anchorage was on the verge of breaking a rainfall record. Not a record that anyone was all that excited about breaking, but a record none the less. 27 consecutive days of rain, not since 1951 has Anchorage seen this many days of rain in a row. Unfortunately as I write this on Sunday I can tell you that the record has indeed been broken though in my opinion it’s not necessarily a good thing. Back to Friday night when knitters proved once again that we are a formidable force and that a little rain would not keep us at bay. Wool is warm even when wet!

As I said it was warm, bright, and a lot of fun was being had at FNYC. Atta was gearing up to go in search of the perfect satin ribbon to finish off a hat that Kay was working on for an upcoming class. The hat was beautiful, and a quick knit, from the Boutique Knits book. As you can see it is a seriously cute hat! Good call on the ribbons Atta!

Debbie Moore was casting on a second sock with a beautiful self striping yarn Supersocke 100 in the Holiday color way. The first sock is quite cute, the pair promises to be adorable, while her granddaughter Dani was diligently working on a bright purple cabled lap blanket. I will have to get pictures of the blanket for you at a later date it is quite an impressive blanket for such a young lady.

Betty spent a good deal of time fighting a complex lace pattern, but in the end she prevailed and was quite pleased with the result. I went shopping! I got lost in all of the wonderfully bright colors of all of the Amy Butler Sweet Life bags that are adorning the shop. I am certain it was due to the atmosphere outdoors that I chose the brightest of the colors, the orange full zip came home with me on this day, and I am so happy that it did. It has added brightness to my daily travels that I just adore!

Quick Tip –

In learning to knit cables I was taught to place a removable marker on the cabled row so as not to loose my place from cable to cable. I have added to this a tip that Annie taught me, which is to write out the rows on a post-it note and cross them off as you go, this keeps me focused while knitting, but also if I put the project down for an extended period of time I can pick it up and know right where to begin again. Not every cable project requires both place keeping techniques but sometimes it’s nice to have the added security.

Welcome friends to the Far North Yarn Company Blog. It is my sincerest desire to make this blog an extension of FNYC. I hope this blog allows you to feel connected to, and always a part of, FNYC even when you are not able to be sitting at the little table knitting, and laughing with friends. FNYC is a place for me, and hopefully for you, where you always feel welcome, comfortable, creative, and amongst friends. I know that there are times when I am stuck someplace all I want to do is be among friends at the yarn shop. I hope that when you are on the slope, at your desk, stuck at home with a cold, or otherwise detained, this blog allows you to visit, and feel the warm welcoming glow of a place where friends gather. Welcome to FNYC on-line!

I found it very fitting that my first blog inspiration gathering trip to the shop, also happened to be Kay’s birthday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY KAY!!! The birth of the FNYC blog, on the day Kay was born, very fitting indeed! Annie and Atta made the cutest little mini grape “cake” with a candle and all.

Grape Cake!

Though soon after everyone had shared in the mini grapes, a man delivered to Kay a brownie sundae and not just any brownie sundae a behemoth of a brownie sundae! Kay as generous as always and probably very full of mini grapes divvied up the sundae onto plates for all to share. We all celebrated Kay’s birthday by knitting, eating brownie sundae, and feeling quite ill afterward.

Happy Birthday Kay!

Please join us each week to see featured photos of finished projects, projects in progress, and projects just being cast on. Also join us for any FNYC news updates, because as you know there is always something going on! If you are especially proud of a finished project or casting on for something special please come in on Friday nights between 5 – 7p.m. so that we may feature your project and the story behind your inspiration.

Thank you for visiting the FNCY blog!
